General purpose MDF substrates for interior wall linings, joinery, and cabinetry
General Purpose Interior MDF
The most widely used substrate for M-Bossed panels. Uniform density, smooth surface, and excellent machinability. Ideal for painted wall linings, joinery, cabinetry, and furniture. Interior use only.
Factory Primed General Purpose MDF
Standard MDF with a factory-applied primer coat. Ready for top coat paint directly. Popular for wall lining panels, door skins, and joinery where a paint finish is the final specification.
Colour Core MR MDF, by Timberwood Panels
Moisture resistant MDF with colour pigmented throughout the entire core, not just a surface coating. Toxin-free with E1 formaldehyde classification. Ideal for feature walls, splashbacks, toilet cubicles, furniture, and decorative panels where a pre-coloured surface is desired.
Interior and structural plywood substrates
AB Grade Interior Hoop Pine
100% Australian Hoop Pine. A-grade face, B-grade back. High-quality finish with low knot count, ideal for feature walls, cabinetry, and visible interior linings. Interior use only.
BB/BB Grade European Birch
Imported European Birch with consistent, void-free core. Popular for its clean contemporary edge detail and smooth face. Excellent for cabinetry, furniture, and exposed architectural applications.
CD Grade F11 / F14 Structural
General purpose structural plywood for wall linings, flooring, and bracing. C-grade face suitable for paint or overlay. Cost-effective where aesthetics are secondary.
BB/CC Grade European Poplar
Lightweight European Poplar, approx 30% lighter than standard ply. Popular for joinery, shopfitting, and projects where weight is a consideration.
Standard 18mm MDF is our most common substrate. It machines cleanly, holds the emboss sharply, and takes paint beautifully. Colour Core MR MDF is a genuinely exciting emboss substrate, because the colour runs through the full depth of the board, M-Bossed's press creates a panel where the raised relief sits proud in solid colour, with no need for any paint or finish. The embossed pattern arrives pre-coloured and ready to install, making it a compelling option for architects and designers looking for a bold, low-maintenance feature wall with built-in colour.
BCA Group 1 and Group 2 fire rated MDF substrates for commercial and public buildings
Trade Essentials Fireguard MDF
Australian-made Group 2 MR MDF with a fire retardant core. Certified to AS/NZS 5637.1 and full-room tested to AS/ISO 9705.
Fire Rated MDF Group 2
Screwable core with fire retardant additives throughout. Fire properties maintained after cutting and sanding, no special edge treatment required.
STD FR MDF E0 PEFC
Group 1 rated FR MDF, the highest fire rating available. PEFC certified with E0 formaldehyde emissions.
Fire Retardant MDF Panel
FR MDF from Australian-sourced materials. Available in standard or MR substrate. Inherent acoustic qualities popular for commercial wall linings.
BCA Group 1 and Group 2 fire rated plywood and decorative panel substrates
Fire Retardant Plywood
Veneer impregnated before production, entire board is fire retardant. Lighter and more impact resistant than FR MDF. Paint or stain without affecting Group 2 rating.
Fire Rated Group 2 Plywood
European Poplar with veneer impregnation throughout. Lightweight and easy to machine. Certified to AS 5637.1:2015.
Hoop Pine Veneer on FR MDF Core
Group 2 FR MDF core with 0.6mm A-grade Hoop Pine veneer. Natural timber look with full BCA compliance. E0/E1 formaldehyde. Chain of Custody certified.
Group 1 Fire Rated Decorative Panel
Only panel in Australia achieving Group 1 with a premium timber look. Non-combustible core. Natural Hoop, Blackbutt, and Spotted Gum finishes. Acoustic options available.
For fire compliance, we recommend Matilda Fireply® as the preferred substrate. Full-board impregnation means our embossing press does not compromise the fire rating at the surface.
Interior and exterior moisture resistant MDF substrates
MR MDF, Standard Grade
Water-resistant resin throughout. Suitable for kitchens, laundries, and bathrooms with intermittent moisture exposure. Not waterproof.
HMR MDF, Upgraded Grade
MDI polyurethane resin that doesn't react to moisture. Superior dimensional stability. Preferred for joinery in wet areas and commercial applications.
MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME (MTX)
The only MDF engineered for full exterior use. Acetylation permanently modifies wood fibres at the molecular level, eliminating moisture absorption without coatings or treatments. Class 1 durability, fully rot-proof, and termite resistant. M-Bossed confirmed embossable.
Exterior and moisture resistant plywood substrates
AS/NZS 2272 Marine Grade
Highest-grade exterior plywood. A Bond glue line, void-free core. For high-humidity and semi-exposed applications.
Exterior Hoop Pine Plywood
Australian Hoop Pine with exterior B Bond glue. High aesthetic finish for clear coating and semi-exposed applications.
Exterior Structural Plywood Cladding, by Carter Holt Harvey
Radiata Pine structural plywood with A-Bond exterior glue and H3 LOSP preservative treatment. Vertical exterior cladding and wall bracing. Rough bandsawn face diffuses UV.

Dual-rated substrates for hospitality, aged care, healthcare, and education
Fireguard MR MDF, Raw Substrate
The benchmark dual-rated board. Group 2 fire rated and moisture resistant. Australian-made at Toolara, QLD. Certified to AS/NZS 5637.1.
MR + FR MDF Panel
Both moisture resistant and fire retardant core. Hotels, aged care, schools, and healthcare.
Hoop Pine FR Panel
Natural Hoop Pine veneer faces on a fire retardant substrate. BCA Group 2 for feature walls in Class 2–9 buildings.

Finger jointed pine, spruce, and hardwood lining board substrates
FJ Pine Lining Board, Raw
Plantation softwood with knot-free, stable profile. Our primary solid timber substrate, embosses cleanly and accepts paint, primer, and stain well. Ideal for feature walls, VJ lining, and joinery.
FJ Pine Lining Board, Factory Primed
FJ pine with factory primer applied. Top coat paint can be applied directly after installation. Popular for residential and commercial wall lining.
H3 LOSP Treated FJ Pine, Exterior
H3 LOSP preservative treatment for decay and insect resistance above ground. Suitable for exterior lining under eaves, alfresco areas, and porches.
European Spruce, Raw
Fine-grained European Spruce with consistent pale appearance. Slightly harder and more resinous than pine. Popular for Scandinavian-inspired interiors where a natural grain sits alongside embossed pattern.
Appearance Grade Hardwood Lining
Pale, warm Australian hardwood with subtle grain. Responds beautifully to embossing. Premium substrate for feature walls and high-end joinery with clear or stained finish.
Clear Hoop Pine Lining Board
Queensland-grown Araucaria in clear or feature grade. Fine, uniform grain with minimal knots. Premium choice for embossed feature walls. Accepts stain and clear finish beautifully.
WRC Lining Board
Naturally durable, lightweight, and dimensionally stable. Class 2 durability, suitable for semi-exposed applications including eaves and alfresco without treatment.
FJ Pine is our primary solid timber substrate, consistent density and clean emboss every time. Hardwoods require confirmation before embossing as density varies, talk to us first.
Fire certificates, technical data sheets, SDS, installation guides, and compliance references
All linked documents open directly from the manufacturer's website. Fire certificates and TDS documents are the primary references for specification submissions, builder compliance, and council approvals. Where a document requires login or a specific project order number (e.g. Bord FR MDF certificates), contact the supplier directly.
Fire certificates for products certified under AS 5637.1 are typically project-specific documents issued by the manufacturer. Where a blanket certificate exists it is linked directly above. For Bord Flameblock® FR MDF, a unique certificate number is issued per sale, request this from Bord at the time of ordering. The Austral FR Panel Group 2 certificate covers the solid, un-slotted panel only. Always verify that the certificate covers your specific installation method, as alterations (perforation, slotting, different fixings) may affect the group rating.
