The rumpus room where the big screen lives and movie night actually feels like an event. These rooms have one thing in common. The wall behind the screen is not just a wall. It is the entire visual experience.

Why the wall behind the screen matters more than you think

Think about what happens in a cinema. The screen is surrounded by darkness. There is nothing competing for your attention. No bright white walls catching light from the screen and bouncing it back into your eyes. No flat, featureless surfaces that make the room feel like a spare bedroom with a TV in it.

The wall behind the screen sets the mood for the entire room. When the screen is on, it frames the viewing experience. When the screen is off, it is the focal point of the space. This gives you the visual impact and the light-absorption benefits where they matter most, without committing to panelling the entire room. It is also the most cost-effective option, typically requiring only two to four panels depending on the wall width.

This works especially well in multi-use rooms where the media wall is one zone within a larger space. The textured wall defines the cinema area visually and creates a clear focal point.

Wrap the room

For a dedicated home theatre, wrapping all four walls (or three walls plus the screen wall) in embossed panels creates a fully immersive cinema environment. The texture absorbs and scatters sound from every direction, the dark surfaces eliminate light reflections from all angles, and the room feels like a purpose-built cinema rather than a converted spare room.

Practical considerations: cables, mounting, and speakers

Hiding cables behind panels

One of the most practical benefits of panel cladding is cable management. Because embossed panels sit over the existing wall surface, there is a natural gap between the panel and the plasterboard behind. This gap is perfect for running HDMI cables, speaker wire, power cables, and ethernet for streaming devices.

Plan your cable routes before installation. Mark where your TV bracket, speakers, power points, and any other connections will sit. Run all cables in conduit fixed to the wall before the panels go on. When the panels are installed, the cables are completely hidden. No cable covers, no trunking, no visible wires. Just a clean wall with everything behind it.

Mounting a TV on embossed panels

This is the question we get asked most often for media room projects. The answer is straightforward. Embossed panels are fixed to the wall over plasterboard, so the wall structure behind them is unchanged. Your TV bracket bolts pass through the panel, through the plasterboard, and into the timber studs behind. The panel adds 9mm to 12mm of thickness, so use slightly longer bolts than the bracket manufacturer specifies.

Pre-drill through the panel to avoid cracking the surface. Use a stud finder before you mark your bracket positions. And if you are using a full-motion bracket that swings out from the wall, make sure the bracket arm clears the textured surface when it moves.

Speaker placement

In-wall speakers can be installed by cutting an opening in the panel before fixing it to the wall. For surface-mounted speakers, position them at the edges of the panel or on adjacent walls. If you are running a surround sound system, the rear and side speakers go on the untextured walls, and only the front left, centre, and front right channels need to work with the feature wall.

Projector screens

If you are using a projector with a pull-down or fixed screen, mount the screen in front of the embossed panel. The textured wall becomes the visual surround that frames the screen. When the screen retracts, the embossed wall is the feature. This dual-purpose setup means the room looks great whether the screen is up or down.

The rumpus room upgrade

Not every media room starts as a dedicated theatre. Many start as a basic rumpus room, a spare bedroom, or a section of the garage that has been slowly converted into a hang-out space. These rooms often have the TV, the couch, and maybe a gaming console, but they lack any sense of design or intention.
